  5. Born in Pudsey, West Yorkshire. He captained England in 23 test matches 1952-56 and was England's first professional captain. In 1938 at the Oval he scored 364 against Australia, a world record test score until beaten by Gary Sobers 1958. He was knighted for services to the game 1956.
